The Muse // Loulou de la Falaise, the free-spirited bohemian

loulou muse falaise
Loulou de la Falaise in Yves Saint Laurent for Vogue, 1970.

A powerful spirit and a dazzling and sparkling personality, no wonder Loulou was baptised in parfume instead of holy water! (Shocking, by Schiaparelli, to be more accurate) Weather a myth or not, it doesn’t even matter. The legacy she left in terms of style and styling, and her feminine-chic touch of inspiration, made her not only Saint Laurent’s muse but also an eternal symbol of fresh spirit and playful creativity.

With an eccentric model as a mother and a royal french figure as a father, Loulou’s life took an unexpected turn at a young age, when her parents divorced and she and her brother were sent to foster care. Her attempts to follow the norms where doomed to failure due to her rebellious nature, so she got expelled for several times until getting into the fashion world, where she could finally find the means to express her creative and powerful personality. It was alongside Yves Saint Laurent that she shined to the fullest. A friend and co-worker for him but also a constant inspiration, Loulou was the first woman in history to actually get a paid job as a Muse, in the early 70s’. For more than three decades, she designed jewelry and hats for Yves Saint Laurent, and the latter period brought her in the position of designing her own clothes.

Her eclectic style and atipical approach left a strong trace in the development of fashion, and many elements she made famous back then are actually still cool today, like the turbans and colourful scarfs wrapped around the head. At her wedding with Thadée Klossowski de Rola in 1977, she wore a bohemian enssemble, representing a 16th century suit with harem pants and a large turban, designed  by Yves Saint Laurent, Rive Gauche.

What was she famous for?
Loulou was a rebel, free-spirited and naturally charming, developing a unique bohemian deLuxe look, combining elements from the Anglo-Irish aristocracy and the eternal chic of Parisian woman. She was the first Muse to actually own her job with this entitlement, a designer of clothes, hats and jewellry, a close friend of Yves Saint Laurent. Loulou de la Falaise is famous for her untamed spirit expressed with a lot of fantasy details and a specific sense of humor.

What was her style?
Her unique style included many colourful material, rich prints and heavy accesorising. Her style was joyful, happy, full of life, exploring cultures and materials, and integrating the boheme elements of the gypsy style and Irish aristocracy in a fresh, city version, with a touch of feminine chic.

The signature look.
Wearing many scarfs on her head in a turban-knot was one of her signature looks, that has kept it detached cool look until today. Combining statement jewelry in courageous looks. Short hair and a deep smile.

Fall trends preview // 14.15

trends+

While the fashion weeks are still unfolding right now as we speak, I couldn’t help myself making a brief review of the trends and tendencies I have noticed so far. So, here is a quick report on the trends that caught my eye in the past few weeks.

knits

Nu-i asa ca arata bine?

Feelings of comfort, smoothness and warmth on your skin. What more can you wish for a delightful winter? This season is all about about being comfy and fashionable at the same time! I love the knitted pieces, from head to toe. Spoted at Chanel, Hermes, Marc Jacobs, Yohji Yamamoto and more. Kenzo takes it all to another level, combining chunky knit fibres with gloss and glitter. How cool is that? 🙂

sportswear

//

Another massive trend, which  began to develop since last year, is the sportswear influence seen all over. Weather we’re resuming it all to some parkas and oversized jackets with sporty influences, or weather we go sporty from head to toe, with inspiration from different scenes (tennis, jogging, etc), the border between casual and sport seems to melt more and more.  Not only the silhouettes, but also the materials, like polar wool, are  being imported into the fashion scene. This year, we talk about fun and leisure! And our healthy, dynamic and aware lifestyle is reflected in the relaxed way we dress.

metallic sheen

//

Yes, everything is glowing everywhere!I love the shinny accents on top of so many different materials and in so many inspired combinations. You can go metallic all the way, like Mary Katranzou, Vladimir Yudashkin or Iris van Herpen proposed, or make the so-in combination of shiny skirt and chunky woollen sweaters, as seen at Veronique Branquihuino. Either way, the shine and sparkle is the way to go this coming season!

rich texture

//

No matter your style and preferences, there is one big trend ascending in the past few years, that has made a huge impact in this season as well: the focus on texture! While colour has lost ground in the last seasons, or gained a minimalist importance as seen in the black and white creations, the texture is the star right now! So if you want to keep it up and keep it fashion, mind this: invest in rich, beautiful textures and you will definitely not fail! Forget the rules you learned so far and make bold combinations of plain materials with interesting textures and  floral or geometric patterns. You might as well hit the score!

patchwork 456

//

Taking it a step further, crazy combination of all kinds are in the spotlight! Interesting patchwork looks, combing layers of different textures and colours, are one of the power-looks this season. Don’t be afraid to dare and merge different pieces into one, following the same previous advice: rich, heavy textures go along with prints or jewellery applied on materials, even if it may feel strange in the beginning. You can start by choosing a theme or a color to relate to, so that you keep the unity of the composition. Whatever you choose, don’t forget to enjoy your play!

ombre colors copy

Inspira-te din prezentarile Elie Saab, Marc Jacobs and Alberta Ferreti.

//

This season may be not all about the colors, but it surely brings a different approach on them! For example, pastels are scoring high, bringing light and femininity to minimalistic creations this winter. Then, you have the deep and suave tones of ombre combination, that makes it all  flow! This amazingly color scheme is both dynamic and feminine, and looks great on almost anything. Get inspiration from Elie Saab, Marc Jacobs and Alberta Ferreti.

round shaped shoulders++

Nu in ultimul rand, hai sa vorbim si despre forma.

Last but not least, let’s talk about shape. The round shape is really trending, as seen in the major change about volumes of the last years. Yes, the round-shaped shoulders, raglan sleeves and capes are the lead in terms of shape and form. If you haven’t already, invest in one of this beautiful feminine pieces and enjoy the comfort of the curves covering your shoulders.
